A life in movement.
A sky full of possibility.
An artist’s curiosity. A teacher’s care. The story behind Big Sky Pilates begins under the changing skies of Saskatchewan.

Always a
different horizon.
Growing up in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Melanie was captivated by the constantly changing skies. In the backyard or travelling along the TransCanada Highway, the view ahead could be completely different from the one in the rear-view mirror: blue skies and sunshine in front, dark clouds and a vivid rainbow behind.
Those evocative skies stayed with her. They would eventually inspire the name Big Sky Pilates — a reminder that perspective can shift, and new possibilities are always ahead.
Before the studio,
there was the stage.
Dance classes, choirs, piano, and music and dance festivals filled Melanie’s childhood. After a year at university, she moved to Ontario to study Musical Theatre at Sheridan College, graduating in 1998.
A professional career as an actor, singer and dancer followed, spanning two decades and including seven years at the Shaw Festival, three seasons at the Charlottetown Festival, and many television, film and theatre credits.
During the original Mirvish production of Hairspray in Toronto in 2004, recurring neck pain led to frequent visits with therapists. It also sparked a fascination with anatomy. Melanie began asking questions about how the body works — a habit she has never lost.

Then came the
“aha” moments.
Her first Pilates mat classes left Melanie underwhelmed. She wanted to understand why each exercise mattered, but the connection wasn’t there yet. Dance and yoga remained her physical outlets as she managed the wear and tear of a performing career.
After the birth of her second child, a wish to restore her core brought her to Body Harmonics in Toronto. This time, everything began to connect. She remembers the sheer delight of heel drops on the Reformer — and the discovery of a new relationship with her body.
As her own recurring pain began to ease, her curiosity grew into commitment. She was hooked. The practice that helped her feel different became the practice she wanted to share with others.
Curiosity,
put into practice.
